Job Opening - Rescue Assistant

We are looking for a Rescue Assistant to join our team. Denver Cat Rescue focuses on transferring in cats from high volume, under resourced shelters and finding them the perfect forever home in Colorado. Our adoptions occur mostly out of Denver Cat Company, but we also have a small shelter facility a few miles away for our use. The Rescue Assistant fulfills a “catch-all” position and the perfect candidate will be well-rounded.

This role is ideal for someone looking to get experience working in animal welfare.

Hours: Average 10 hours per week in off-season and about 15 hours per week during the summer.

Salary: $22-$25/hour depending on experience. We also reimburse for mileage, excluding commute.

Schedule: Flexible; we are willing to work around your other commitments, but the more available you are, the better! Weekend and evening availability a plus.

Essential Job Duties:  

  • Cat care in an animal shelter setting and general upkeep of the space (cleaning, organizing, etc.);

  • Maintaining strict disease control protocol and advising fosters and volunteers on it;

  • Assist in facilitating transfers and foster pickup;

  • Handling some intakes of cats to cat café;

  • Handling some adoptions;

  • Taking shelter and café cats to the vet as needed, and coordinating vet visits for fosters;

  • Assist with administering vaccines, placing microchips, and FIV/FeLV testing;

  • Communicate with fosters, volunteers, adopters, and community;

  • Administrative/computer work, recordkeeping;

  • Coverage when other rescue staff is unavailable (may include evenings and/or weekends);

  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma (required) or higher (preferred);

  • 1 year experience working with animals in a professional setting;

  • Some experience providing customer service in any capacity;

  • Knowledge of cat behavior;

  • MUST have personal vehicle (not shared) that can be used for transporting cats, mileage is reimbursed at the state rate on a monthly basis;

  • Proximity to Denver Cat Company is highly preferred.

Physical requirements: 

  • Ability to drive regularly, sometimes longer distances;

  • Lift up to 40lbs for short distances (putting away shipments, bags of food and litter);

  • Requires bending, crouching, grasping and lifting.
